Call For Nominations for the 3rd HFES Doctoral Colloquium

Nominations are being accepted for the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society’s (HFES) Doctoral Colloquium, which will take place Monday, October 13 at ASPIRE, the HFES Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL.

The Colloquium is a one-day event (with lunch) for PhD students who are expected to graduate within two years of the colloquium (by 2027). The colloquium will focus on obtaining and succeeding in an academic position. Tentative topics include getting an academic job, working in academia, expectations for promotion and tenure, mentoring PhD students, and work-life balance.

Nominations must be submitted by the department heads/chairs as the event will be limited to two students per department in each academic institution. The nomination materials must include:

  • A nomination in the form of an email from the department head/chair that includes nominee’s name and email address
  • A single PDF attachment containing the following information from the student’s advisor and the student:
    • PhD Advisor: A short letter that includes: (1) the student’s name, email address and HFES student membership number, (2) a statement that the student is in good academic standing and expected to graduate within two years of the colloquium, and (3) a brief description of how the student will benefit from participating in the colloquium.
    • Student: An abstract (less than 500 words) summarizing current research activities and future career plans.

Department chairs/heads should email the nominations to vpaquet@buffalo.edu and linda.boyle@nyu.edu with the subject line: “2025 HFES DC Nomination”. Nominations are accepted through August 30, 2025. Early nomination is highly encouraged as space is limited to 30 students.

There is a $50 fee per attendee for this event.  All expenses incurred to attend this event are the responsibility of the nominee or the nominating department.
